over the weekend

I know it’s Wednesday. And thank god for that. This week is turning into something of a weird one. And by weird I mean expensive – got a dumb ticket yesterday DOWNTOWN (where moving violations = hitting moving person) for something even dumber, EVEN THOUGH I acted as a responsible, honest citizen when questioned. I don’t want to talk about it. However, I thought I’d follow up on the great weekend I had with a few pics. It went by in a blur, mainly due to it being packed with work and a long ass trip all the way out to Paola.
Friday night, Mike and I met up with the Critical Mass group and started biking with that crew until they made one huge crap-ass mess trying to force 200 bicylists through the heart of the Plaza on a Friday night in the middle of the art fair. They started getting really rowdy with the cars, yelling at them, cutting off pedestrians and Mike saw someone key a damn car. We decided to bust outta there before it got any shittier. The whole point of Critical Mass is to encourage motor / bicyclist friendliness, which is most definitely not happening anymore. So instead, we broke loose and went over to the KC Art Fair, and later met up with friends at The Peanut and then 75th.
Next day: wedding in Paola. My friend Angie, whom I feel I’ve known forever, got married to her beloved Scott, in Paola. WAY FAR OUT THERE, GOOD SOLID HOUR AWAY PAOLA. Anyway, poor people had to move their reception after their backyard became overrun with sewage (nothing says romance like raw sewage!) So after a very Catholic ceremony we all chowed down and drank, and even though it was in a cafeteria (last minute), you could tell Angie & Scott didn’t care where it was, they were just happy to be married, however it happened.
They’re moving to Boise, and I’ve got an invite to drive out there with her in a month. A very, very tempting offer. And I will miss her
The rest of the weekend went well, which included the aforementioned 10-mile run, immediately followed by a 7 hour work shift at my bookstore job. Oh, and?? TRUE BLOOD FINALE. It was .. okay. (spoilers ahead) I am just glad that Maryann’s dead, but Eggs?? Was that REALLY necessary? I was okay with him. Also very happy Sam didn’t die after all, as he’s grown on me and stop fawning after Sookie, who has also become less lame.
PS A very crucial detail of Angie’s wedding: Mike started DYING of laughter in the middle of the service after imagining the priest holding up a cheeseburger when doing Communion. Like, crying, shoulder-shaking laughing for the remainder of the service. PRAISE THY HOLY QUARTER POUNDER.

sleeping in a treehouse

I love this bedroom makeover … it’d be like sleeping in a cabin in the middle of a forest. Or a tree.

avett brothers

I first heard of the Avett Brothers last year, and loved what I heard. These last few months though, they’ve been everywhere – playing in a bar I randomly showed up to – and I gave their new stuff a listen. AMAZING.
I may or may not have listened to this song about a trillion times. I was falling asleep last night watching Letterman and they came on and played this song and it was a freaking lullaby. Seriously, so good.
PS Also, Meagan? Men with Beards. You’re welcome.

What’s with pretty Hollywood actresses and this guy? Hasn’t this guy dated Courtney Cox or Jennifer Aniston and like Uma Thurman or something outrageous? And now this too?
He’s the Spike Jonze of the music world. Except Spike Jonze doesn’t look homeless and confused.

How perfect is this outfit? From new blog obsession Kansas Couture. I love this gold skirt and how it looks with the colors of all the rest of it; it’s girly and flirty and still very sleek. Bravo.

TEN WHOLE DAMN MILES
September 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment
So I did my first 10 miler yesterday! It was a total coaster ride of feeling totally good and fine and energized, and then awful and exhausted and my legs wanting to give out under me. But Meagan and I did it, and it was tough. However, my nerves about the race aren’t nearly as bad anymore. I know what I have up against me, when to pace myself, when to make up time and run a bit faster, and the exact course so I don’t end up turning right instead of left and ending up being forced to do a marathon. I still have fears of what will happen in the last 3 miles – I felt like the Tin Man at mile 10, with my joints creaking and my legs feeling like they’re made out of jelly. And it’s not exactly the best part of town, so I’ll have to pack heat when I do a practice run over there this week.
A few pics from the run.
So I’ve got another 10-miler I need to do before the race, and I’ve now got the confidence in myself that I CAN do this, which is so unbelievable. 6 months ago? Never ever EVER.

Working diligently at desk, googling something. Probably “kansas city cockroach problem yes?” or something similar.
Coworker literally appears out of air, and: “YOU SHOULDN’T BE LOOKING AT THAT WEBSITE, LAURA.”
ME (practically empty pants): GOOD GOD
Steve: Oh sorry…
Me: I am shaking, Steve. You could scare the nuts off a squirrel.
Steve: (looks at me like I just said I’d eat his children) Huh?
Me: Nevermind. You scared the crap out of me.
Him: ……….. just tell mike I’ll call him next week.
Me: (quivering) …. yeah. Will do.
A quick sampling of why I am, and will always be, too sarcastic and obnoxious for a white-collar office. NO ONE GETS IT.
